Rav Shamshon Brodsky zt

As we go to press, we have learned of the passing of Rav Shamshon Brodsky zt"l, rov of Bais Medrash Rabbeinu Yaakov Moshe in Flatbush and one of the last remaining members of the Mirrer Yeshiva in Europe and the pre-war Slonimer Yeshiva. He was 93. As one who merited learning from and hearing shmuessen from Rav Yeruchem Levovitz zt"l, the renowned Mirrer mashgiach, and as a chavrusah of Rav Chaim Shmulevitz zt"l, the Mirrer rosh yeshiva, Rav Brodsky symbolized the greatness of the Mirrer Yeshiva and all of the prominent Lithuanian yeshivos.

Rav Brodsky served as a rov in the Bronx and later in Flatbush. He was from the founders of Yeshiva Zichron Moshe in the Bronx and served as menahel at Bais Yaakov Bais Miriam in the Bronx. He also served as a rebbi at Yeshiva Toras Chaim in East New York and later as rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Birkas Reuven in Flatbush.

Rav Brodsky was a remarkable talmid chochom, with wide-ranging yedios in all areas of Shas and poskim. He was, above all, a self-effacing gadol baTorah, who shunned the limelight throughout his life and carried himself with immense humility.

The passing of Rav Brodsky is a tremendous loss to the entire Olam HaTorah.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rebbetzin Rickel Brodsky a”h, who passed away several years ago, and his daughter, Mrs. Shainy Goldman a”h.

During the last period, Rav Brodsky, who formerly resided in Flatbush, Brooklyn, lived in Lakewood, NJ.

He is survived by a large mishpacha of bnei and bnos Torah. His children are Rav Chaim Mendel Brodsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Zichron Shmayahu of Toronto; Rav Moshe Brodsky of Lakewood, executive director of Yeshiva Gedolah Zichron Moshe of South Fallsburg; Mrs. Gittel Levovitz, wife of Rav Yaakov Levovitz, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Shaarei Binah in Ashdod; Mrs. Chava Serebrowski, wife of Rav Peretz Serebrowski of Bensonhurst; and Mrs. Slava Zuckerman, wife of Rav Pinchos Zuckerman of Detroit.

The levayawas held Tuesday evening at the Mirrer Yeshiva in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and the aronwas then flown to Eretz Yisroel. A levayawas slated to be held at Yeshivas Mir-Yerushalayim, followed by kevurah on Har Hamenuchos.

The family will be sitting shivahin Yerushalayim until Wednesday evening. Shivah will then continue in Lakewood, where the phone number is 732.364.0878.
